Communication: Skills for study and beyond

Effective written and oral communication is the foundation for academic success. It is just as important in the workforce: skills you acquire as a student will be essential to you later, and give you a critical edge in a competitive labour market.

Nexus Academic Editing is an excellent way to develop your skills as a writer. By providing instant improvement for your essays and other academic texts, editing will boost your morale and improve your confidence. The feedback your receive will also help you develop your academic writing, especially if you take the time to reflect on the comments and changes made and the reasons for them.

But editing isn't the only service Nexus provides for academic writers. Indeed, if you're keen to acquire the skills you'll need to write at this level independently, individual tutorials or group workshops on academic communications might well be the solution.

Custom workshops and tutorials

Based on years of experience teaching in this area at university, I've designed a series of modules on academic communications to meet the needs of students at either high school or university.

These modules will help with research and other study skills, and with the planning, drafting and editing of all kinds of academic texts, especially essays. The modules are flexible, so they can be taught either as one-on-one tutorials or as workshops for groups of two or more, customized to suit students' individual requirements and objectives. Modified to the task at hand, they will help you target any problems you might be experiencing in the planning, organizing and writing of your essays, reports or other academic texts.

They can even be structured around a major writing project you're engaged in. This would allow us to explore the process fully: from choosing the question or topic, to the research and planning of your written or oral response; or from writing, editing and proofreading drafts to final submission.

Would these workshops help me?

Nexus tutorials or workshops on academic writing are designed for anyone engaged in a course of study that requires extended written responses, whether at secondary or tertiary level. They would be especially useful for:

  • senior secondary students (years 10, 11 and 12) in all subject areas;
  • HSC English students, in particular those doing Advanced and Extension modules (especially Extension 2);
  • university students in arts, or in the physical or social sciences, at either undergraduate or graduate level;
  • teachers and students in education;
  • nurses and other medical students;
  • students at TAFE and other higher education institutions required to write extended pieces for assessment.
